Jaw reduction - Face2Face Clinic | Helping trans women transition successfully

Jaw reduction

The jaw angle in men is more prominent due to a thicker masseter muscle that grips it, but especially due to a more pronounced bony structure of the lower jaw, which is more extensive in that location both backward, downward and outward than in women. The jaw angle can be reduced via access past the mouth and without visible scars by surgical jaw correction (osteotomy) in which the excess bone is removed.

Procedure

The volumes in the middle and lower thirds of the face can be changed through a combination of a displacement of the bone structures of the upper and lower jaw. These changes can give the face more volume and make it rounder. This procedure makes the chin less prominent, the jaw angles less pronounced and the upper front teeth more visible.

All incisions are in the mouth, so there is no visible scarring. Again, the displaced bone pieces are reattached using titanium plates.

Recovery

  • Swelling and bruising: Swelling and bruising are common after jaw reduction surgery, particularly in the first few days following the procedure. The swelling usually reaches its peak within the first week and gradually subsides over the following weeks or months. Applying cold compresses or ice packs to the treated area can help reduce swelling and alleviate discomfort.
  • Pain management: Some discomfort or pain is expected after jaw reduction surgery. Dr. O. Beckers and Dr. M. Van Genechten may prescribe pain medications or recommend over-the-counter pain relievers to manage any discomfort during the recovery period.
  • Diet and eating: You may be advised to follow a soft or liquid diet for the initial days or weeks after the surgery. This helps prevent strain on the jaw and promotes proper healing. As you progress in your recovery, you can gradually reintroduce solid foods as tolerated.
  • Oral hygiene: Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial during the recovery period.
  • Rest and limited activity: It is important to get plenty of rest during the initial phase of recovery. Avoid strenuous activities, heavy lifting, or any activities that can strain the jaw or facial muscles.
