Facial Feminization Surgery
Chin surgery
The chin is an important part of feminizing the face. In FFS, the chin can be adjusted by surgical correction of the jaw (osteotomy) through the mouth. In this process, the loosened bone fragments are first moved to adjust the shape and then fixed back with titanium plates.
What makes a chin masculine or feminine?
In general, a female chin tends to taper toward the middle. In men, on the other hand, the chin often shows two protruding points (under the canines), with a flat area between them. As a result, a man's chin often looks fuller and more square, while a woman's is rather pointed.
In addition, one notices that a man's chin is often vertically higher, with more space between the lower lip and the base of the chin.
Procedure
- General anesthesia.
- Intra-oral incisions to prevent visible scarring.
- Sawing - The chin is sawed on both sides from back to front, loosening a horseshoe-shaped piece of bone.
- Height reduction - A second cut may be made parallel and slightly removed from the first cut, followed by removal of a piece of bone.
- Narrowing - The middle part of the horseshoe-shaped piece of bone may be removed to make the chin more pointed.
- Adjustment of position - The final position of the bone piece is determined and the chin can be moved forward or backward.
- Fixation - Titanium mini plates and screws are used to fix the bone pieces. These will not be removed.
- Suturing - The wound is closed with soluble sutures.
Recovery
Symptoms such as swelling, bleeding or numbness occur to varying degrees, which will gradually decrease over the long term.
With chin surgery, residual swelling and numbness take longer to resolve.
