Facial Feminization Surgery
Eyelid surgery
Eyelid surgery, also known as canthoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that is not specifically aimed at feminizing the face (FFS), but is often performed in conjunction with other procedures.
Drooping upper eyelids can be quite disruptive to daily life, so eyelid surgery can be a solution. The correct functioning of the eyes also depends on the position and function of the eyelids.
In addition, the eyelids have a great impact on a person's appearance. As we get older, the structures in and under the skin become looser and the upper and lower eyelids may droop. This can lead not only to a tired appearance, but also to the development of functional complaints, such as decreased vision, headaches, eye pressure or heavy eyelids.
Procedure
The procedure for an eyelid correction is an advanced surgical intervention aimed at addressing the aesthetic and functional issues of the eyelids. Below you will find a more detailed description of the steps involved in an eyelid correction:
- Consultation: The first step is an extensive consultation with Dr. O. Beckers and Dr. M. Van Genechten. During this consultation, they will discuss your aesthetic goals and perform a thorough evaluation of your eyelids. This includes assessing the amount of excess skin, fat deposits, and the condition of the eyelid muscles. Based on this evaluation, the surgeons will discuss the most suitable treatment options with you and answer your questions.
- Preparation: Before the surgery takes place, Dr. Beckers and Dr. Van Genechten will provide specific instructions. It is important to follow these instructions accurately. Additionally, preoperative photos may be taken to assess the progress after the procedure.
- Anesthesia: Local anesthesia combined with sedation or general anesthesia may be used during the eyelid correction, depending on your comfort level and the complexity of the procedure.
- Incisions: Dr. Beckers and Dr. Van Genechten will make precise incisions. For an upper eyelid correction, an incision is typically made in the natural crease of the upper eyelid. For a lower eyelid correction, the incision can be made just below the lash line or on the inside of the lower eyelid (transconjunctival).
- Removal of excess skin and fat: After the incisions are made, Dr. Beckers and Dr. Van Genechten will remove excess skin, fat tissue, and, if necessary, reposition muscle tissue.
- Suturing: After adjusting the tissues, Dr. Beckers and Dr. Van Genechten will carefully close the incisions using fine sutures. These sutures are usually of the absorbable type, which means they dissolve on their own over time.
Recovery
Recovery from eyelid surgery can vary from person to person, but generally it takes several weeks for the swelling and bruising to subside and for the skin to heal completely. However, the results of eyelid surgery can be long-lasting and contribute to a fresher and more youthful appearance.
