Hair transplantation

Table of contents:

Hair transplantation is often the solution for people who are balding or want a fuller head of hair. Various methods are available, such as Direct Hair Implantation (DHI) or Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). We will work with you to determine the best option. We offer a professional and transparent approach, so you know exactly what to expect.

  • Our hair transplants take place in Antwerp and Hasselt.
  • Consultations are held in Genk, Hasselt, Antwerp, and London.

Procedures

1. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE-method)

FUE is short for Follicular Unit Extraction and is the newest method of hair transplantation. It is the successor to the FUT method (also known as the strip method). In FUE, the hair follicles (grafts) are transplanted one by one from the donor area to the balding or thinner areas. The FUE hair transplant is performed under local anesthesia, so anesthesia is not necessary. No stitches are used.

How does a hair transplant with the FUE method proceed?

Before your treatment begins, your head is prepared. This includes applying markings, shaving the back of the head, and anesthetizing the donor area and the treatment area.

Step 1: Determining the hairline and outlining the treatment areas

Based on your feedback, the hair technician applies the necessary contours and markings to your scalp.

Step 2: Removing the grafts

After the preparation and local anesthesia of the donor area, the "harvesting" of the grafts begins. During this phase, you lie on your stomach, and the technician uses a 0.3 mm micro-punch to remove the grafts one by one. This process takes about two hours, depending on the number of grafts to be harvested. The removed grafts are checked and prepared for implantation.

Step 3: Creating the incision channels

During this phase, you lie on your back. The receiving area is locally anesthetized, and incisions are made in the direction of hair growth.

Step 4: Implanting the grafts

The grafts are implanted one by one into the incisions.

Step 5: Aftercare

After the hair transplant, your scalp is treated. You will receive instructions from our hair technicians on how to care for your scalp in the coming days. After a few days, you can gently wash your hair.

2. Direct Hair Implantation (DHI method)

The DHI method stands for Direct Hair Implantation and differs from the traditional FUE and FUT methods. No channels or incisions are made in the treatment area.

A key component of the DHI method is the Choi pen. This instrument is used to both harvest and implant the hairs. It ensures highly precise placement of the hair follicles and minimizes the risk of damage to the hair roots, resulting in optimal outcomes with natural-looking hair growth.

The aftercare for both direct hair implantation and traditional techniques is approximately 12 months.

A hair transplant using the DHI method proceeds as follows:

Step 1: Anesthesia

Before the treatment begins, your head is prepared and anesthetized.

Step 2: Removing the grafts

After anesthesia, the "harvesting" begins. Hair follicles or grafts are removed from the donor area using a DHI implantator or Choi pen.

Step 3: Implanting the grafts

With the DHI Implanter or Choi pen, the grafts are placed directly into the skin without the need to create channels in the recipient area first. This significantly reduces the chance of bleeding during the implantation process.

Step 4: Aftercare

After the hair transplant, your scalp is treated and a bandage is applied. Additionally, you will receive useful instructions over the next few days on what to expect after a hair transplant.

3. Follical Unit Transplantation (FUT method)

We no longer do the FUT method (Follical Unit Transplantation), which is an outdated technique. It leaves a large scar.

Grafts

A hair transplant involves relocating hair follicles, also known as grafts, from a donor area to a recipient area to treat hair loss. Here are the most common types of grafts:

  1. Single Grafts (1-grafts): Contain one hair follicle and are used for fine hairlines.

  2. Double Grafts (2-grafts): Contain two hair follicles and are used for moderate density.

  3. Triple Grafts (3-grafts): Contain three hair follicles and are used for areas with significant hair loss, such as the crown.

By using different grafts, a natural-looking result can be achieved that suits the individual needs of the patient. The choice of graft type is determined during a consultation with the doctor, taking into account factors such as the degree of hair loss and aesthetic goals.

General

What is a hair transplant?

A hair transplant is a surgical procedure in which hair follicles are moved from an area with sufficient hair growth (the donor area) to an area with thinning or lost hair (the recipient area). The aim of the procedure is to restore permanent hair growth in areas where the hair has thinned or completely disappeared, usually due to hereditary hair loss, also known as androgenetic alopecia.

Complications

What are the possible side effects of a hair transplant?

The most common side effect is scarring. A certain degree of scarring cannot be avoided with any procedure. The FUE graft harvesting technique causes very small, round, and usually white scars in the donor area where the grafts have been removed. With long hair, these are almost undetectable.

Other possible side effects include:

  • Infections
  • Crusts or pus around the surgical sites
  • Pain in the scalp, itching, and swelling
  • Inflammation of hair follicles (folliculitis)
  • Bleeding
  • Loss of sensation around the surgical sites
  • Visible areas of hair that do not match the surrounding hair or appear noticeably thinner
  • Permanent hair loss if your hair is already thinning
