Permanent
hair removal

Table of contents:
Preparation and aftercare
Proper preparation is essential for a safe and effective electrolysis treatment. By carefully following the guidelines below, you can maximize your results and minimize the risk of skin irritation. Electrolysis is the only FDA-approved method of permanent hair removal and requires proper preparation to effectively target and destroy the hair follicle.
Preparation
Do not tweeze, wax or sugar
For at least three months prior to your first electrolysis treatment, do not remove hairs using methods that pull the hair out from the root, such as:
- Tweezing
- Waxing
- Sugaring
These methods remove the hair root, making it impossible for the electrologist to properly identify and treat the hair follicle.
Stop shaving in time
Shaving is allowed because it leaves the hair root intact. However, the hairs must be long enough to be visible and treatable during your appointment.
- Face: stop shaving at least 4 days before your treatment.
- Genital area: stop shaving at least 7 days before your treatment.
Avoid sun exposure
Intense sun exposure, tanning beds and self-tanning products should be avoided during the week prior to your treatment. Irritated or sunburned skin may be more sensitive and prone to adverse reactions.
Keep your skin hydrated
Well-hydrated skin generally responds better to electrolysis. We recommend using a gentle moisturizer daily and drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment.
Aftercare
Following an electrolysis treatment, the skin may be temporarily more sensitive. Proper aftercare supports the natural healing process, reduces redness and swelling, and helps minimize skin reactions.
Immediately after treatment
- Apply the recommended aftercare cream as instructed by your practitioner.
- Avoid applying make-up to the treated area for the first 48 hours.
- Do not use scrubs, exfoliating products, acids or fragranced skincare products for 48 hours.
- Avoid activities that significantly increase blood circulation for 48 hours, including: intense exercise, sauna, jacuzzi or hot tub, steam rooms, hot baths, tanning beds.
For facial treatments, cold compresses may help reduce swelling and discomfort.
Skin reactions
Temporary skin reactions may occur following treatment. These are a normal part of the healing process.
Redness and mild swelling
The most common reaction is temporary redness and swelling around the treated hair follicles. This is caused by increased blood flow to the area and usually subsides within a few hours to several days.
Warm or burning sensation
The treated skin may temporarily feel similar to a mild sunburn. This sensation generally resolves within 24 to 48 hours.
Small scabs
Small superficial scabs may occasionally develop. This is a normal part of the healing process. Allow them to heal naturally and avoid scratching or picking at them.
Bruising
In some cases, minor bruising may occur, especially in sensitive areas. These bruises usually resolve spontaneously within a few days to a few weeks. An arnica-based cream may help support the healing process.
Temporary irritation or itching
Individuals with dry or sensitive skin may experience temporary itching, redness or mild irritation. Regular use of a moisturizer can help restore the skin barrier. If irritation persists, a mild 0.5% hydrocortisone cream may provide temporary relief unless otherwise advised by your physician or practitioner.
Proper preparation and aftercare are essential for a safe electrolysis treatment and contribute significantly to achieving the best possible long-term results.
